Diagnosis and Treatment

sleepcareDiagnosing Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea can only be truly diagnosed through an overnight sleep study by a sleep physician at a sleep center. They measure the number of partial or complete apnea events each hour. They also measure heart rate, oxygen levels and muscle activity during sleep. In our office, we can evaluate the signs and symptoms and then send you home with a small, simple monitor to measure blood oxygen and pulse rate while you sleep. We can then run a computer program to analyze the information. This is a screening tool to see if you might need the overnight sleep study.

Treatment Options

Medical and dental treatment options include:

cpap

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) which requires you to wear a mask over the nose and/or mouth that is connected to an air pump. While CPAP machines are the gold standard for treating Sleep Apnea, most patients cannot or will not tolerate it because it can be awkward, inconvenient and claustrophobic. CPAP cannot help you if it is in the closet or under the bed gathering dust!

Oral Appliance Therapy is indicated for mild to severe sleep apnea. These small appliances literally can fit in the palm of your hand. They work by positioning your lower jaw forward enough to hold the airway open and allow free flow of air into the lungs without interruption. These appliances are comfortable, portable, easy to wear and noninvasive. We are among the very few who have the specialized training to create, adjust keep the oral appliances working properly for you.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recognizes Oral Appliance Therapy as a first-line treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Properly fitted and monitored, these appliances have proven equal to CPAP for effective treatment of OSA.
