Sealants are a preventative step to help keep cavities and other dental problems at bay. Sealants are completely clear in nature and are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Sealants prevent decay from developing and can prevent the need for fillings, root canals and extractions. They are especially beneficial for pediatric patients who are prone to developing cavities, but are just as beneficial for adult patients as well.
Why would Sealants be needed?
Sealants may be needed or wanted if you have issues with tooth decay. If you already have a few fillings or if you tend to have cavities at most of your dental appointments, sealants can help to protect your teeth. Sealants are a great option for kids who may not necessarily take good care of their teeth or who have bad eating habits. Sealants can last for one to three years and can be replaced as needed.
What makes you a good candidate for Sealants?
Most people who want sealants can safely have the procedure done. The procedure involves absolutely no anesthetic, so it’s safe for kids and adults of all ages. If you feel that you’d benefit from sealants, we can perform an exam to determine if it’s the right choice for you. You can benefit from the sealants lasting for a few years and protecting your teeth while they’re in place.
What happens during the procedure for Sealants?
First, we will examine, clean and dry the teeth that will be receiving the sealant. The sealant liquid is then applied to the teeth only on the chewing surfaces. Most often, sealants are only applied to the back teeth since these are the most susceptible to decay. The sealant is then hardened into place with a curing light. Sealants are completely clear and blend well into the teeth. You’ll need to have the sealant replaced every few years or when they begin to wear away.
